Moving Party!

on Tue, 02/14/2012 - 03:45

A packing list for when friends move. (I've already finished my own move and god willing and assorted other things, I will not be moving for some time.)

  • A picnic bag complete with wine glasses, bottle opener, knives (pointy and table knives) and a cutting board
  • Prosecco  - you know your people, you'll know how much.
  • Bagels from Kettleman's
  • Orange Juice  - fresh squeezed!
  • Scallion cream cheese + regular cream cheese
  • 2 packs of blueberries

Throw the food items in the picnic bag, show up around noon and declare yourself the Mimosa Engineer.

Happiness all over.

Heads In The Boat

Something I don't often talk about but does drive my philosophy about project management is crew. I was on a team through part of college and I'm now on a local competitive master's team. I drove over the Steel Bridge yesterday evening and saw 3 fours (four-person boats) out on the water underneath the Broadway Bridge. It was about 6pm and 30 degrees and the 1st of December - that's called dedication. You can't be out there just messing around, you are generally quite serious when you're out there.

I'm the 9th seat. I'm the coxswain on the team.

Why I wanted to like Everlane: A cautionary tale on product marketing

A dear friend (@sisoma) on twitter put out something for a new (what looks to be a flash sale) site. I was intrigued, like any good bait for a flash sale site, and clicked over.

Here's what I got, and I'll paraphrase for comic effect here: "Hullo sucker! We'd totes love to give you access into our new exclusive overpriced (but aren't you worth it?) things! However, in order to get your eyes on our page, you'll need to invite a number of friends! Invite 50 friends and we give you free shipping for life! Adorbs, isn't it!"

For the record, here's their UI for showing how many 'friends'

Additions to the reading list:

This. This piece by Mona Simpson was the story I was looking for about Steve Jobs. I read through this a few times before I caught the writer's profession: "a professor of English at the University of California, Los Angeles". What's great about this writing is that the author fully inhabits her voice and her story, it's simple and clear and she knows who is telling the story.

More Rands, again: A piece on conferences called Building Serendipity. He lays out 'different types of conferences' and I heard the similarities for our Drupally world, and I wonder what happens when DrupalCons rival
